One of My Biggest Entrepreneurial Risks Was Shutting Down LinkedIn Forever
I know what you're thinking. "You're crazy! LinkedIn is a great platform for building your personal brand and finding a job." And you're right, it can be. But for me, it wasn't the right fit.
I first started using LinkedIn in 2009, I was fresh out of college and looking for a job. I quickly realized that LinkedIn was a great way to connect with people in my industry and learn about new opportunities. I also started to build my personal brand, sharing my thoughts and insights on the M&A industry.
Over the years, I grew my LinkedIn network to over 30,000 connections. I also received a lot of positive feedback on my content. But something just wasn't clicking for me. I felt like I was spending all my time on LinkedIn and not getting much in return.
I wanted other ways to connect with people and build my personal brand. I decided to shut down my LinkedIn account and focus on other channels.
It was a risky move. I knew that I would be leaving a lot of potential opportunities on the table. But I also knew that I needed to do something different. I wasn't happy with the way LinkedIn was working for me.
So I took a leap of faith. In 2021, I started my own newsletter on M&A (mergers and acquisitions). I found 20+ contributors to help me out. And I started sharing my content on other channels, like Facebook and Medium.
It was a lot of work. But it was also a lot of fun. I loved the challenge of building something from scratch. And I loved the feeling of providing value to my readers.
Fast forward to today. My newsletter has over 100,000 subscribers. We're one of the top ten M&A Newsletters in the world. And We're still growing!
I'm not saying that LinkedIn is a bad platform. It can be a great tool for some people (specially for dealmakers trying to purchase their first or second business). But it wasn't the right fit for me. I needed to find a way to build my personal brand and connect with people that was more aligned with my career.
Don't be afraid to take risks. If you're not happy with the way things are, then change them. There are always other options to build your personal brand. You just have to be willing to look for them.
I also like to fight against giants like LinkedIn, Bloomberg, Financial Times, MergerMarket, Money Stuff, I'm always looking for new challenges. I'm here to shake things up. I'm here to disrupt the industry. And I'm here to make a difference and provide as much VALUE as possible to you - my readers.
And yes, I know there are a few little copycats launching newsletters in the same topic too, (right after me). But that's just fine with me. I welcome the competition. It only makes me work harder.
